Bookshelf Re-Styling

I spent some time re-styling my bookshelves.  Its kind of a fun process.  I got out everything around the house I thought might work, put it in a pile and then proceeded with some trial and error.  I am happy with how it turned out!

My friend gave me this little owl and I love him.

I love turquoise Ball jars and vintage hankies.  I could have a room full.

I hung this flower painting to the back of the bookshelf.  I got it at a garage sale for $2.  I bought it for the frame but I decided I kind of like the flowers!

I also got this lamp at a garage sale.  I sewed some ruffles and glued them to the lampshade.

Guest Bathroom Finished!

Welcome to my new guest bathroom!!  Finished moments before my whole family arrived for Thanksgiving!!!  It’s a small bathroom & hard to photograph 🙂

The new vanity is Hickory.  We got rid of the 1989 banjo style vanity & counter top!  There was much celebration when that thing went in the garbage can!!

I love the 1″ tile backspalsh.  There are different textures in the tile & every few often there is a stainless steel square!

Of course I got to go shopping & get new towels!  That is the reward for all the hard work!

I wanted something Christmas-y in the bathroom but I wanted to stay true to my new color pallet.  So I made this Elf saying picture – cute!

The towel rack has been in the bathroom for years.  But I finally got smart and numbered them.  I hated not knowing whose towel was whose.  Now I know Ryan is #1 Sally choose #5 and guests are #3 and #4!!

I purchased 5 different items to hang above the toilet.  A funky wire basket, a different shelf with doors, a big basket towel holder thing and this.  After holding them all up – I choose this mirrored cabinet from Lowe’s.

I feel so happy every time I walk in there!!!

Pillow Shams for the Rapunzel Room

I Decorated Sally’s Room over a year ago with a Rapunzel theme.  I have wanted to make these pillow shams for the past year – and I finally got to it.  What motivated me?  Sally was trying to cut the fabric up & sew them herself!  Yikes – she’s only 4!

I love how they turned out.  I didn’t want them super “piecy” because I love this fabric so much.  I did spend a lot of time with all the quilting.  The center is quilted in 1 inch lines diaoglally criss-croseed.

The top is pretty much a quilt with binding and everything – it just happend to have a pocket on the back where the pillows insert.  Now I am off to find the floating lanterns and hopefully Flynn Rider 🙂

Decorating with Heirlooms – Paint is your Friend

Nothing can change the look of an item like paint. It’s an inexpensive way to update, change, or just be creative with your heirloom decor.

Decorating with Heirlooms – Displaying Collections

Displaying CollectionsI love how Inspiration For Home Blog didn’t just hang one art piece, but grouped many together and even overlapped them.

I love the collection of old frames from Vintage Revivals Blog.

This is a cute way to display grandma’s buttons from Write. Click. Scrapbook.

Decorating With Heirlooms – in My House

My House
An old window on the front porch holds seasonal decor.

Stacks of old books can be used to lift items or in this case a small lamp.

Old trunks can act as tables, coffee tables, or other furniture and they are useful storage. I have quilts stored in these old army trunks.

This is silver tablewear from my great grandparents. We don’t use it, but displayed this way, I can see it everyday and reflect. I saw this idea on Write, Click, Scrapbook.

Quilts can be functional or decorative. I have my grandmother’s crazy quilt hanging in the entryway. I love looking at it everyday. It is my favorite heirloom and so it gets the most prominate location. I have hung it with curtain clips on a curtain rod. I switch directions every now and then so it doesn’t get pulled in one direction.

This red and white quilt is also my great-grandmother’s work. I love it hung over the banister. It helps block out all the upstairs mess!

This is a chair my great grandmother stitched. It still functions as a chair. I have made similar ones into pillows. The pillow sitting on top of the chair is a quilt piece from another of great-grandma’s quilts. If you end up with quilt fragments – they make darling pillows!

I love old frames – I could fill my house up with them! I found this one at a garage sale, but it could be an heirloom! I change what I put in it. This season it has Valentine’s Day garlands hanging in it.

I have a few empty old frames on the piano and some other old paintings in interesting frames leaning against the wall. Somehow I love the art pieces on the floor – like I have so much art I don’t know what to do with it all! (not really!)

This piece used to be an old radio/turntable. We gave it an overhaul and now it holds table linnens and acts as a buffet server. Click here to read about the transformation.

I can showcase some of my old china and crystal pieces in my hutch. They are decorative but they are the first to grab when I am having a dinner or a party.

This old radio sits in this odd-shaped space next to my stairs. I have no idea what I would otherwise place there. This just seems perfect. This belongs to my husband’s side of the family. It would be fun to paint it a funky color – but for now it is the origional wood color.

I turned this old window into a mirror with hooks for the entryway.

The Rapunzel Bedroom

Here goes the transformation of a “Rapunzel” inspired room. Lots of spray paint will be involved!!!I got these frames from thrift shops and garage sales. I took the pictures and glass out and spray painted them heirloom white.

If you preorder the “Tangled” DVD from the Disney store you get 4 Tangled prints and a $10 coupon – no brainer! I knew I wanted to use the pictures in Sally’s room, but they are a funny size. So, I used the over sized frames and just tacked the picture in the center – I love how it looks!
I already had this quilt but needed to fix it up a bit. I cut lavender circles and flowers out and appliqued/quilted them right on top and I love the new look it gives.

New flower center and the quilting is swirled
I finally painted this little night stand that I got at a garage sale – 2 of them for $5! It began as a yellow flowered night stand with brass handles – I’m sure you’ve seen the look. One can of Heirloom white later and I love it! We also spray painted the thrifted jewelry box and the thrifted mirror! (notice the Cinderella perfume, it was from Santa and smells so cute!)
I sewed a little quilt to go on top of the nightstand. I love how it turned out – super simple I think it took and hour start to hand sewn binding!
I used the puff balls from the birthday party and hung them in the Rapunzel room. The puff balls were made from white tissue paper and I lightly spray painted the edges pink or purple so they have a softer, blended feel.
